Dog beds, leashes, toys and other essentials for pets

I have been around dogs all my life. I grew up with big black Labradors and currently live with a fiery and goofy Boston Terrier. Besides the constant companionship and unconditional love that comes with owning a dog, the best part is spoiling them with all the best things. The essentials a dog needs are important to making sure their well-being is a top priority, and here’s a checklist to consider.

Bed

Finding the right place to lay your head isn’t just a human thing. Dogs need a solid foundation for a good night’s sleep, so any old dog bed won’t do.

A soft and supportive donut bed is a great place to start if you want to pamper your puppy. This Donut Cuddler comes in multiple sizes and has deep crevices if your dog likes to dig or bury his head.

You could get a bed that is as chic as it is functional. Parachute dog bed has an elegant two-tone cover that is fully machine washable and ideal for large or small dogs.

Leash

We all have leash preferences, but one thing I would highly recommend when looking for a leash for your puppy is to look for one that comes with a poop bag holder. It changes life.

This durable and resistant leash has a padded handle, so even if your dog is still working on his leash manners, your hand won’t hate you at the end of the walk. Plus, it’s available in multiple colors to help you personalize your pet’s essentials.

A 3-in-1 leash is perfect for the more active pet owner. This one has its own belt so you can run hands-free with your canine companion.

Collars and Harnesses

Whether you like to use a collar or a harness while your dog is in town is entirely up to you (and your dog). But you have to make sure that you are getting something that you and your puppy are comfortable with.

If you want something for a puppy that tends to be more than a handful on walks, this hardness has a lightweight, cushioned nylon design to avoid any wedging and has two different attachment points for your leash: at the front and on the top.

Voyager harness has a strong velcro closure and is a step style, which means there is no hassle in trying to fight for a harness on your dog’s head or risk catching his fur in a clip .

Toys

When it comes to toys, dogs are quite special. But it’s always good to have several different types of toys in case those tastes change (because they do).

The squeaking sound of a dog toy is unlike any other sound on this planet. It can get irritating quite quickly. Change it up a bit and offer them something wrong (it’s more of a growl, really) instead, like that pig with polka dots.

If you want something that will keep them occupied a bit more during the day, get a treat dispenser toy. This one from Chewy, aptly named the Bob-a-Lot, can be filled with any treat and used to keep even the smartest puppies at bay.

Food and treats

The food and treats are quite subdued depending on your dog’s stomach and tastes, but a good way to get things done for your dog is to have it delivered right to you.

Ollie allows you to fully customize your dog’s human grade meal plan “based on age, breed, activity level, allergies and ideal weight.” It is preparing meals for your puppy. Pet plate is another food delivery service with human grade ingredients that are pre-worn and ready to be devoured by your dog.

Greens are one of the best “treats” to have in your home. These dental chews give your dog the treat they deserve while helping to fight plaque and tartar and keep your puppy’s breath smelling a little better than the dog food they are eating.

Balls

Finding a bowl that will keep your dog nourished and hydrated is pretty straightforward. But you can always switch to something that looks a little better than a regular dog dish.

You can get a bowl as reliable as your tumbler with the Yeti Boomer Bowl. It is durable and rust resistant, has a non-slip coating on the bottom, holds up to eight cups of water, and is dishwasher safe.

Want something a little more elegant? The Target’s internal brand raised dog feeder, Threshold has a sturdy wooden frame and an easy to clean top. In addition, it is available in two different sizes depending on the size of your pet.

Hygiene

Keeping your dog clean is a full-time job, so you need to have the right things on hand to do it. Wipes can help keep them fresh between baths, but investing in a good shampoo is essential.

Those Brandless Herbal Pet Wipes are paraben, phthalate and sulfate free and contain no alcohol so they won’t dry out your dog’s sensitive skin. They also smell of cucumber.

Kiehl’s doesn’t just do great skin care for humans, they do a very good shampoo for dogs without soap also. With chamomile and plant-derived glycerin, it is gentle yet effective in removing all the dirt and odor from your pet.

Travel carrier

Traveling with your pet is sometimes a necessary inconvenience. Obtain a carrier that both you and your dog feel good in and which is preferably TSA compliant if you plan to fly with them.

This Fable Travel Carrier is an elevation over the mesh ones you are used to seeing. Small puppies can lie on the padded base and keep an eye on things thanks to the nifty cutout in the front. It even has an exterior pocket for treats or extra poop bags and an interior clip to keep your puppy safe.

If you need something a little more user-friendly, this pet carrier is like a hotel suite for your dog. The stretch sides allow your puppy to stretch out when there’s room, but they fold up to tuck them neatly under your seat.
