Hinsdale Humane Society’s Revamped Annual Pet Walk Includes Scavenger Hunt, Dog Pie Eating Contest and Cat Cove – Chicago Tribune

On June 25, the Hinsdale Humane Society is hosting its annual Pet Walk Festival “fully loaded” with animal and people friendly activities on the grounds of the Pet & Rescue Resource Center at 21 Salt Creek Lane in Hinsdale from 1-4 p.m. .

This year marks the animal welfare organization’s 33rd pet walk, which has grown from just a charity walk to a full celebration with past and present adopters, said Deborah Kraus, development director of the Hinsdale. Humane Society.

Since moving into their new facility in 2018, the Pet Walk has become a space that welcomes current and future pet owners, with the shelter remaining open during the event for adoptions.

Kraus said they had ideas to revamp the event a few years ago, but “we all know what happened in 2020.”

“This year we have the opportunity to expand it a bit,” Straus said. “Once in a while you have to improve things a bit.”

The festival will have a face painting station, a dog pie eating contest, a bouncy house, a scavenger hunt available to anyone who wanders around the neighborhood, crafts, food and drink and a walk of cakes.

“When was the last time someone participated in a cake walk?” Straus burst out laughing.

Organizers have also added a Cat Cove, which is a spinoff of their Cat Cafe based on successful events at the shelter. Occasionally, the Hinsdale Humane Society hosts community events like “wine and mustaches” or “meow and margaritas.”

“Feline pet parents also wanted a way to celebrate felines because most of them don’t like to be walked on a leash,” Straus added. Cat and dog owners can also purchase pet paint kits on the day of the event.

Although the shelter is open for adoption, most people aren’t ready to adopt the first time they see an animal, Straus noted. She said they invite everyone to get comfortable in the shelter space and get to know the many people who bring their recently adopted pets back to their “base” for the Pet Walk.

Tickets are $20 per person (13+) and include 10 tickets to be used to pay for on-site activities, drinks, and raffles. Children under 13 are free. Additional tickets will be available for purchase for $2 each at the door.
